Dr. van Duren is Vice President of Variation Reduction for Sutter Health, a Northern California not-for-profit health system of 24 hospitals and 5,000 affiliated physicians. Dr. van Duren uses a grassroots approach to engage physicians in analyzing practice patterns to reduce variation, increase quality and lower costs. Under his leadership, the clinical variation reduction program has grown to more than 400 projects and $30 million in savings.

He also trains clinicians in leadership, change management and the art of communicating with patients. He has over 15 years experience as a managed care executive serving hospitals, health plans and physician groups. His previous roles include Vice President of Clinical Transformation for Sutter Medical Network 2012 to present; Chief Medical Officer for Sutter Physician Services from 2008-2012, Vice President of Clinical Services for Hill Physicians Medical Group from 2004-2008, and Chief Medical Officer for the San Francisco Health Plan from 2002-2004.

As Vice President of Clinical Transformation at Sutter Medical Network and Chief Medical Officer of Sutter Physician Services, Dr. Van Duren has led and advanced the Sutter Medical Network’s variation reduction initiative and established key partnerships with payers around pharmacy gain sharing.  Both of these vital initiatives impact quality, service and affordability of patient care delivery.  Under Dr. van Duren’s leadership, variation reduction was established as a Sutter Medical Network Participation Standard and, with the inclusion of Palo Alto Medical Foundations’ pioneering work, has reduced health care spending by $18.1 million since 2008.

Dr. van Duren received his European Baccalaureate from Aloysius College, his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Lebanon Valley College, his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and his MBA from the University of California, Irvine – The Paul Merage School of Business.
